Signs of Basement Water Problems

What Can Cause a Leaking Foundation?

Water leaking into the basement is a common problem for homeowners all over the world, but especially for those in Northern VA where the rains are heavier. Homeowners are continually looking for ways to make use of every square inch of potential living space. As a result, basements are being converted into more usable space. The challenge with construction companies and home designers is to then design and build a home that has quality basement waterproofing to avoid future problems. A leaking foundation can cause a lot of headaches for a homeowner that can all be avoided with a quality repair system from Basement Masters Waterproofing.

The first thing to know about the basement waterproofing process is that basement water problems occasionally arise during the construction process, but will disappear when you put in a drainage system. Not all problems are caused during construction, but rather because of the passage of time, so it’s important to continue to watch your home for signs of damage.

If you have a lack of drainage around the foundation wall, that can result in significant amounts of water entering your basement through:

  • Tie holes-This is where the metal remains of rods holding the concrete forms together during the wall pouring process meet. They can be seen along the vertical seams where the two concrete forms come together.
  • Wall and floor cracks
  • Floor seams
  • Honeycombs

Wherever the water is coming in, you should have it looked at by a professional, like those at Basement Masters Waterproofing.

Other Causes of a Leaking Foundation in Northern Virginia

Construction and incorrectly directed drainage are only some of the problems that may face your basement and foundation. You may also have leakage from your wall cracks or the space left where the floor comes together with the wall (called the cove joint). This, however, rarely, if ever, leaks as long as the sump system and drain tile system you have installed in your home are working correctly. On occasion, the cove joint can show signs of moisture in areas a great ways from the pump or in alcoves or bays. We can use injections on this joint with urethane and, when cured, this will stall the water long enough to allow it to drain. Your floor cracks should never leak. If water is coming up through your floor cracks, the pump may not be working or the drain tile could have a blockage.
